“You Was At The Club, Bottoms Up When I First Met You”, – This is how American rapper The BoyBoy described a first meet with someone special.
How would you describe your first encounter with someone special? The rapper shared an Instagram recording of the message. Since then, the recording was remixed and parodies of the video became the meme that today we all know and love.
Original version of you was at the club
When was it first uploaded? The video was posted for the first time in 2018, and it shows The Boyboy West Coast lip-singing to his song.
Afterwards, Twitter user @foosgonewild reposted BoyBoy West Coast’s video with the caption “RATE HIS FLOW 1-69”. The post quickly gained a lot of popularity on the web.
The same year, Twitter user @252a3d posted some pictures of the rapper with his sunglasses hanging from his face, with the caption “sunglasses = the battery to recharge , and who knows what else”.
You was at the club spread
In the beginning of 2019, youtubers started publishing parodies of the song, after it was posted on the platform, including a Bane Edition published by YouTuber Bryan Brandonship, which obtained many views and likes since then.
Twitter user @ex3junya posted on the platform the instrumental version on the song, with the caption “look what we just fucking found”, and got retweeted 130 times, also getting plenty of likes!
Another twitter user, @cfgsta, uploaded a High Quality version of the song on twitter, and less than a month later, lilfatherfigure (Instagram user) edited the Genie interpreted by Will Smith into the videoclip, and got over 300.000 views.
Since then, several Instagram users started posting parodies and different versions of the video, such as Juhmall veg, who created a Shrek scene with it and got tenths of thousands of views.
Youtube user AJZtheSavage then uploaded a video using the song’s lyrics to pick up girls at a fast-food drve-thru, obtaining thousands of like in only a week.
@BoyBoyWestCoast decided to give into the trend, and shortly after joining the platform tweeted a video of himself lip-singing to the second verse of the “You Was at the Club” song. He got retweeted 2,200 times and got 6,600 likes in a week.
At the beginning of 2019, Tiktok user @yeetonmyplease uploaded the soundclip of the song and over 5.000 Tiktok users used the song to create videos on the platform.
The trend consisted in using the song to transform into BoyBoy West Coast – by painting on facial hair, wearing gold chains and using sunglasses on their forehead while holding a cup.
Since then, Youtube user ThonkToks created a compilation of the best parodies of You Was at the Club, and obtained over 10,000 views, followed by another similar video of Really Got It user, which also got over 10,000 views in just a couple of days.
The Genius Youtube channel, around the same time, uploaded a verified episode with Boyboy West Coast, in which the rapper, who is wearing a bulletproof vest, told the public the meaning of the lyrics of the song and talked about the meme which became viral. The video was watched over a million times in only one day.
In the video he explains that the song was about a girl he liked and saw at the club, who inspired him to write the song and how he was feeling.
