Artist Dino Tomic is capable of making amazing images out of the material that most of us use only in the kitchen. It’s fine grained, some say it’s a crucial spice in every meal and stands beside bottle signed Pepper. Yes, you’re right! It’s salt! Only he doesn’t keep it in the bottle like we all have on our tables, but in a special plastic squirt bottle with the ubiquitous granular substance. Photos in the gallery show the process of creating beautiful images by controlling the amount of salt that comes from the bottle and rearranging it on the huge black paper. The result is fascinating- the images look like great graphic drawings.
Maybe the most interesting of his works are the ones that are made in the totally opposite tones than they would appear in regular viewing, what’s black is white and vice versa, including all tones in between. Only looked in negative, the image gets the realistic look (the eye image above, for example). That’s the skill which is simply amazing, for sure, and his ability to control the material is also fascinating knowing how unpracticable movement of salt granules can be.
