Now, what has Taylor Swift got to do with Starbucks coffee? On September 3, 2012, Twitter user emre (@chanelpuke) poked fun at the singer, tweeting that she looked like the kind of person who would show up late to class because of Starbucks:

The tweet didn’t go super-viral, but it did get 1,000 retweets and 700 likes within the span of 6 months. 

Rise in popularity

Now this is where the phrase “15 minutes late with Starbucks” started to become a meme. The earliest version of this meme became popular on Tumblr. One user posted an illustration of a character from a webcomic called Homestuck holding a Starbucks coffee. It was captioned “Enters the Medium 15 minutes late with Starbucks.” The post became so popular it received over 3,000 notes.
