Y Can’t Metroid Crawl is a very famous meme that originated from the gaming and Metroid communities and it is used to troll inexperienced gamers. It originated from a user post, that was left as a comment to the Miiverse while playing Super Metroid.
In 2013, PaulyU posted “Y Can’t Metroid Crawl?” to the Miiverse together with a screenshot of Samus. She is standing in front of a spot where she should be rolling.
The post immediately went viral online, as everyone started making fun of PaulyU, as he was unaware of Samus’ roll function and because he defined Samus as “Metroid”.
The day after, many threads were posted to NeoGAF and Reddit, most of them including PaulyU’s post together with other players struggling with Metroid.
Kotaku then documented PaulyU defeating Super Metroid and showed how to do this using comments. One among many was a comment at the end of the game, when a Metroid appeared, which read “Jellyfish is helping yes.”
Since then, the catchphrase became extremely popular among the fandom of the game, referring to noobs. The joke is also present on the Miiverse Wiki where it also reads that the comment gained over 3000 “Yeahs” before the end of 2015, even though, sadly, it has been deleted since then.
The phrase became a popular in-joke in the fandom for the inexperience PaulyU displayed.
It was documented on the Miiverse Wiki, on which it is also specified that the comment gained over 3000 “Yeahs” before the end of 2015.
Sadly, however, it has been deleted since then. In the beginning of 2014, Nintendo even tweeted a joke reporting this sentence. A few months after, Twitter user @Electivirus posted a screenshot in Super Smash Brothers WiiU that also referenced the joke.
You can even get a T-shirt with the ” Why can’t Metroid crawl “
