Photographer Rose-Lynn Fisher was in a time of change , loss and copious tears , and like most great artist , their best work comes out in extreme situations . She suddenly began to think ” I wonder if my grief tears look different from my happy tears ” and with that the project was born . She studied more than 100 different tears and found that basal tears ( which are the ones our body produce to lubricate our eyes ) are very different from the tears of chopping an onion . The tears that come out from laughter are way different from tears of sorrow . Every tiny tear drop carries a microcosm of human experience . The project is called The Topography of Tears

So basicly there are three major types of tears : basal , reflex and psychic ( triggered by emotions ) according to Joseph Stromberg of the Smithsonian’s Collage of Arts and Sciences all tears have organic substances that include oils , antibodies and enzymes and all are suspended in salt water . Its interesting that different types of tears have distinct molecules . Emotional tears for example have protein-based hormones including the neurotransmitter leucine enkephalin . which is a natural painkiller that is released when we are stressed – BOOM that’s alot of knowledge for your brain ! Another thing to note is that every tear that is viewed under the microscope is crystallized salt so it would lead to different shapes so that means that even the same type of tear can look different ” There are so many variables – there’s the chemistry , the viscosity , the setting , the evaporation rate and the settings of the microscope ”
