Can you believe that these wonderful colorful patterns are made of paper? Artist Gunjan Aylawadi made these interesting mosaics by using tiny strips of paper thus the title rolled paper art. She calls the technique she uses “weaving with paper” and it implies cut paper rolled into long curled strips that are woven and glued in place. In that way, these beautiful tapestry designs are being created.
In order to get the result that you can see in the photos in the gallery, a long process is required in which the artist must be very careful and to have a good knowledge of math and geometry. It shouldn’t be a problem for someone like Aylawadi having in mind that she holds degrees in engineering and product design. But when it comes to the art she is totally self-taught. Nevertheless, her rolled paper art works has been published in magazines around the world and she’s also shown in a number of groups and solo shows in Sydney where she currently works and lives. Her work was also included in CODA Paper Art 2015.
Take your time to enjoy the gallery and if you like what you see make sure to check out more of Aylawadi’s work on her Facebook and make sure to follow her on Instagram.
The artist says she was inspired to make something new with a simple material like paper
To get the paper ruls, Gunjan cuttes thousands of strips of paper and rolls them onto a thin wire, the results are these stunning rolled paper art pieces
After the paper is rolled on the wire she glues them on hand drawn patters
The paper curls then belnd into one another to create these stunning connections
This technique is very hard to do, but could also be very meditative and adds a layer of texture to the end result
