Back in 2011, Joao Pereira de Souza, 71, was spending his retirement days fishing on an island village in Brazil, not even dreaming that on that day he will gain a very unusual best friend. Today, there’s one penguin that comes for a regular visit to see Joao and it requires a journey of 5,000 miles just to see his best friend! What caused this kind of love and loyalty? Joao saved the penguin’s life on that day five years ago.
Joao found a penguin, which now has a cute name Dindim, on the shoreline. The penguin was covered with oil and in a state close to death. Joao decided to help him and cleaned him up. He was nurturing this little fellow until he looked good enough and strong enough to get back to sea.
“He stayed with me for 11 months and then, just after he changed his coat with new feathers, he disappeared,” said Joao for Metro.
After a couple of months at the sea, Dindim was back! And that is something he’s been doing regularly every year since then. For eight months Dindim is living with his human mate Joao, then taking off to breed somewhere near the coast of Argentina and Chile, and after four months he’s back to see his best buddy, whom he obviously will never forget.
Every year, five years in a row now, Dindim swims roughly 5,000 miles to get to his second home.
