I definitely have a thing for stairs (and bridges, but that deserves a story on its own). I like chilling on the stairs, taking pictures on them and of them especially if they are unordinary and special in some way. That’s definitely the case with these tailed steps in one neighbourhood in San Francisco.
One hundred and sixty-three steps in the 16th Avenue in San Francisco got their unusual and amazing look thanks to a community-led project called simply “The 16th Avenue Tiled Steps Project”. People from this neighbourhood gathered together around the idea to do something special about the steps they use every day.
As you can see in photos in the gallery, the stairs now have a beautiful colorful tile mosaic on them. One must be delighted going up using these amazing stairs, so one hundred and sixty-three steps probably don’t seem like too much of an effort. And that is not all! The fantastic tailed steps mosaic even gets more spectacular when the night comes. The mirror-like tiles reflect the moonlight during the night, and you should see it under the morning sun – it’s magical.
This project took a year and a half to get completed and included the help of over 300 neighbours and KZ Tile, a major SF tile-setting company. As you’re about to see, the effort paid off big time!
