Did you know that there is a park with a living unicorn? What?! You don’t believe me?! You say unicorns don’t live in our world but just in fairytales… Okay, you’re right. I cheated a bit and played with the words, but the opening sentence of the article is actually true, in a way. A sculpture in the shape of a unicorn all made from plants, which makes this sculpture alive in a way, can be seen in at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens among all sort of mystical and fantastic creatures made in the same way.
Mosaiculture is the name of this particular art form applied in creating these amazing works of living art. Most of them begin with a steel frame of some sort, which is covered with steel mesh. This mesh is then covered with sphagnum moss and soil, which is seeded with all sorts of plants. A network of irrigation channels is placed beneath the mesh and it allows plants to grow and stay fresh by supplying them with fresh water.
Check out in the gallery amazing living artworks that were made for the exhibition. Some of them are permanent installations in the garden like fantastic and fascinating Earth Goddess (scroll to the very end of the gallery). More info: atlantabotanicalgarden.org
