Margaret Thome Bekema is a 97-year-old grandma and she has just graduated! Life is full of difficult choices and Margaret had to make one when she was just a high school-girl. Many years ago she attended Grand Rapids Catholic Central High. She liked her high school and had a lot of friends, but life circumstances didn’t allow her to graduate back then, in 1936, when she supposed to. Her mother got cancer and Margaret had to take over the care of her family; it was very difficult for her, she says. But recently she received an honour diploma of her former high school, thanks to a distant relative.
Margaret couldn’t hold the tears when she received the diploma and graduation cap.
“I thank you from the bottom of my heart,” Bekema told Mlive. “I had to quit school to take over the family. It was hard, you have no idea how hard that was. I loved high school and I had lots of friends.”
Central Principal Greg Deja said, “her life has been one of sacrifice and service. It has been so encouraging and inspiring for our community because her choices represent all the core values that we teach our students.”
The principal of Grand Rapids Catholic Central High handed the diploma to Margaret.
The diploma is dated the year she supposed to graduate.
“I loved high school and I had lots of friends.”
She received a high school letter as well.
