A recent book called James and Other Apes is featuring 50 great apes . Chimpanzees , gorillas , orangutans and bonobos , they are our closest biological relatives and they are all in this series of portraits taken by James Mollison . It took four years and seven different ape sanctuaries to complete the images of the book . some were taken in Cameroon , some in the Democratic Republic of Congo , Indonesia , Germany and the USA . Djeke , Fizi , Gregoire , James , Koto and others are all photographed as unique individuals while representing species whose survival is under great threat . With case note biographies , and introduced with powerful and moving essay by Jane Goodall , this book celebrates the great apes . The faces that look back at us also raise profound moral scientific questions – including what it means to define ourselves ” human ”
Before watching the magnificent pictures we leave you with the publisher’s description ” James and Other Apes is a magnificent book that will introduce people to a new world , stimulate thinking , and help people to understand better our place in nature – in the scheme of things. For many it will be a humbling experience . We are different from other animals ( as they are different from each other ) but not as different as we thought ” – Jane Goodall
