Are we going to travel to Mars in the near future? According to plans of Elon Musk which he revealed recently at International Astronautical Congress, held in Australia, this might be the case. He plans to build no more no less than a metropolis on the red planet of the solar system. This intriguing project is planned to start with execution in 2024. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk took the stage and had a speech explaining all the details of this extremely ambitious project.
Elon Musk has envisioned a self-sustaining civilization on Mars in the not-too-distant future. The central point of the project is a massive new rocket system, which costs are the major concern connected with the project realization. However, Musk is very ambitious to proceed with his idea of the rocked system called BFR. In his speech he convinced the audience that he is seriously working on the development of BFR, a new two-stage rocket with a diameter — 9 meters, or about 30 feet — and a height of nearly 350 feet.
“It’s really quite a big vehicle,” Musk said. “The booster is lifted by 31 Raptor engines.”
The time frame was also a point of a discussion in the recent Muck’s speech:
“I feel fairly confident that we can complete the ship and be ready for launch in about five years. If not this timeframe, then soon thereafter.”
If SpaceX can pull this off, it will be the first in history to land humans on Mars. Still, Musk admits that the 2022-2024 timeline was aspirational. The company has yet to test and fly its Falcon Heavy rocket — the precursor to its BFR.
