The Science Behind the Holes
Cavum clouds are formed through a process called ice sublimation. This occurs when water vapor transitions directly from a solid state (ice) to a gaseous state (water vapor) without going through the liquid phase.

This process requires specific atmospheric conditions, including very cold temperatures and high humidity.
When an airplane flies through a layer of supercooled water droplets (water droplets that exist below freezing temperature in a liquid state), the engines’ powerful engines create a low-pressure zone.
This sudden drop in pressure causes the supercooled water droplets to rapidly freeze and sublimate, forming ice crystals.
As these ice crystals continue to grow and fall, they create a cascading effect, pulling more water droplets into the freezing process and eventually creating the characteristic hole in the cloud.

A Rare but Not Uncommon Phenomenon
