The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center has started a unique therapy initiative to help soldiers cope with PTSD , the masks you see below were created by veterans that are still coping from the stress and trauma they’ve experienced . This art program is for soldiers returning from active duty and was diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries and other psychological health problems . Here are some of the work :
1 : A marine created an ” outer warrior ” for his mask
2 : This mask dually examines the significance of death and the surviving spirit that exist once a person is killed
3 : This mask simply describes how many soldiers feel after diagnosed with PTSD and TBI
4 : ” I have destroyed my life and myself so that others may live “
5 : ” a split sense of self “
6 : The soldier who created this mask wanted to show his trouble in opening up to his emotions
7 : Trying to camouflage to try and acclimate back into society
8 : The three stitches on this mask represent the healing process the soldier feel at Walter Reed
9 : Fingerprints on the nose and chin represent resuscitation efforts by this commanding marine for troops he lost
10 : This mask is called ” Emotional hostage “
11 : ” The shock of death ” shows the traumatic memory of seeing an iraqi killed after a gunshot wound to the head
