When you think about a lagoon the first thing that comes to your mind is the color of blue right? Bright blue color of beautiful ocean. Well in the tiny village of Las Coloradas, which is located on the eastern coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, this is not the case, the water is pink. The Ria Lagartos Biosphere Reserve is known for it’s striking pink colors and it’s white salt banks that rise out of the earth similar to icebergs. This stunning phenomenon is attracting tourists from all over the world to come see
The science reason for the strong pink color is because of both the red plankton and the high quantity of brine shrimp in the water, also the city of Las Coloradas used to be a salt mining town, which explains the mountains of white salt you see on the shores. The shore of Los Coloradas is just isolated enough so when you’re there you feel like escaping to nature, or traveling to another world, this phenomenon attracts many Instagramers that come specifically to take the unusual pictures of the pink water ” I couldn’t believe what i saw, I never heard of pink sea before, it’s a unique and magical place, like a dream”. Says Instagrammer Marisa Hampe, in case you’re reading this and think, ” well, don’t over sell it ” just scroll down and look at the photos yourself and tell us this is not the most awesome thing you ever saw.
