Yesterday afternoon, Tompkins Square Park was invaded by a phenomena that comes every year around Halloween. Thousands of good boys and girls, decked out in costumes ranging from adorable to fearsome, filed into the park with their owners and thousands of other spectators who just wanted a glimpse of this year’s festivities. Halloween might be seen as a human’s holiday, but this year it really is going to the dogs.
Pennywise, the horrifying clown from ‘It,’ made quite a splash at the event as one of the most popular costumes, but all of the pups in attendance were brilliant in their own way. Dogs donned in homemade costumes frolicked alongside new friends in store-bought threads, compelling animal lovers from far and wide to make the trip to this new ball court. In fact, so many people showed up that literally hundreds were turned away at the entrance!
For those lucky enough to get in, the afternoon was a spectacular sight of frisky canine activity and endearing costumes that are sure to be the main subject of many peoples’ phone galleries for weeks to come. Among the scarier contenders like Pennywise and Donald Trump were unexpected and creative creations like Rastafarian pups and four-legged tacos. There were even Popes aplenty at Thompkins Square Park!
Some of our favorite canine friends were part of much more elaborate costumes that involved them being carted around on homemade floats and wagons. Obviously this was a pretty big deal for some parade attendees, who had spent weeks and even months crafting eye-catching designs that will make their dogs the talk of the town.
The most important thing though, is that the dogs enjoyed themselves. And if the pictures have anything to say about it, all of those involved had a great time strutting their stuff under the adoring gaze of so many humans.
